Factory Install Features

Whilst the basic features below are initially enabled on the WL-HDD, if Oleg's firmware is installed on the device then you can open up a whole new world of features. The factory features are very basic and leave a lot to be desired.

User Interface

  • There is a user web-interface which allows you to configure the WL-HDD. In early firmware versions, there were quite a few annoyances- such as the lack of a facility to switch off the wireless. Whilst the interface is far from perfect, it is functional.
  • Settings can be saved to a computer as a backup via the web interface.
  • Supports UpnP- when you browse to "My Network places" in Windows XP, there is an icon that can be clicked on. This takes you straight to the web interface. This is only if your router supports UpnP.
  • The firmware can, and should be upgraded to provide more up to date features. Whilst this can be done over wireless, firmware upgrades should always be done on a wired connection. Otherwise you risk having a dead WL-HDD. Whils you can upgrade to later official firmware, Oleg's firmware provides much more functionality providing you know what you are doing.
  • You can keep track of what is going on in your box by checking out the log. There is also an optional syslog server facility. I haven't yet tried this.

USB Key Feature

  • An extra USB port on the WL-HDD allows you to backup a USB key or other USB storage devices. The WL-HDD does this automatically- as soon as you plug in the device, it can either make a copy to the hard disk or make it accessible from computers on the LAN.

Internal Hard Drive

  • Within the WL-HDD enclosure, you can insert any 2.5" laptop hard disk.
  • The WL-HDD supports FAT, FAT32, NTFS (read-only), EXT2, and EXT3 formatted drives.
Note: The WL-HDD will only partition in EXT2 format unless Oleg's firmware is used.

Wireless Features

  • Open System and Shared Key
  • Shared Key
  • WPA-PSK
  • 64/128 bit WEP encryption.
  • Can change Fragmentation and RTS Threshold and DTIM and Beacon Period values.
  • Frame Bursting
  • Optional Hidden SSID
  • MAC Address Filtering

The Advanced wireless screen lets you tweak Fragmentation and RTS Threshold and DTIM and Beacon Period values. It also lets you enable Frame Bursting, which is disabled by default.

FTP

  • Basic FTP is supported, however the setup is very insecure and again, leaves a lot to be desired. You're better off installing Oleg's firmware and setting up VSFTP with proper user management!
